V1 - Basic Steps to Shoot Video – Part One
Description – Get your Amateur and Pro questions answered about video, while you rapidly learn the menu settings and tips and tricks to shoot great looking video with your Canon DSLR. Great foundation. Prerequisites - NONE. Bring your Canon DSLR and ALL your questions. We have the answers to questions that have been holding you back. Level A, Level B and Level C Topics: We begin by answering your questions and confusions about DSLR filmmaking so you have a firm foundation in video to build on. Then, we take you through all the menus and set you up to shoot great video, answering your questions along the way. We welcome being interrupted because that means you've hit a roadblock and clearing it up can’t wait “’til the end”. Our students love this approach. It’s called “ACTIVE LEARNING” – endorsed by Columbia and University of California as the most effective learning technology there is. Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, batteries, lenses, your basic kit, monopod or tripod you plan to use. SanDisk or equivalent CF or SD card, 16 GB, 30-45 MB/s. V2 Basic Steps to Shoot Video Part 2
Description - Part Two of the “V1 - BASIC STEPS TO SHOOT VIDEO” class features a series of hands-on filming drills so you can apply what we covered in Part One and “learn by doing” in real world filming scenarios. Prerequisites – Canon DSLR, camera strap, Polarizer, Neutral Density Filters Series 9, monopod/tripod (with fluid head if possible, but not essential), three charged batteries and charger, SanDisk or equivalent 16 or 32 GB card, 45 MB/s is fast enough. Level A, Level B and Level C Topics: You learn by doing. We built our workshops around “Active Learning” technology. So you will apply what we covered in V1 workshop, so you can make sure you understand and can apply the data as you film with your DSLR – correct video shutter speeds, safe ISOs to use for video, CF and SD card speeds, playback, HDMI cable, monitor options, gear. Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, batteries, lenses, your basic kit, monopod or tripod you plan to use. SanDisk or equivalent CF or SD card, 16 GB, 30-45 MB/s. V3 Moving from Stills to Motion Picture
Description – This hands-on workshop will expand your headspace from capturing a moment to recording a “variety of scenes” to tell a story, and also share tips and tricks of creating storyboards and the gear you’ll need to film motion pictures (slider, jib, dolly), to prepare you for the Cinema Verite and Documentary throughout the week. Prerequisites - Completion of Basic Steps to Shoot Video – Part One, Canon DSLR, monopod/tripod (with fluid head if possible, but not essential), three charged batteries and charger, SanDisk or equivalent 16 or 32 GB card, 45 MB/s is fast enough. Level A, Level B and Level C Topics: 1. We gently invite you to leave the land of one great shot to cinematic flowing images following one upon another to create impact. 2. We have you do drills to bring your mind from “Hold it !” to saying, “ACTION!” before your shots. 3. How to build a storyboard. 4. We’ll have you use different music to push ideas for your storyboard. 5. Learn gear platforms to bring motion to the shot, 6. How to handle lighting issues that come up when the camera’s moving, blocking motion of actors and camera… Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, batteries, lenses, your basic kit, monopod or tripod you plan to use. V4 On Location Filming: Horses on the Beach
Description - We take our new video skills on location to do a series of hands-on filming drills of the horses running on the beach at Morro Rock. Prerequisites – Completion of V1 and V2. Canon DSLR, camera strap, Polarizer, Neutral Density Filters Series 9, monopod/tripod (with fluid head if possible, but not essential), three charged batteries and charger, SanDisk or equivalent 16 or 32 GB card, 45 MB/s is fast enough. Level B and Level C Topics: Applying the knowledge you learned in V1, V2 and V3 you will shoot a VARIETY of shots to build a film montage of the Horses running on the beach…still photographers getting ready…tripods locking down…squinting…horses shaking…riders prepping…ocean breaking…. Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, batteries, lenses, your basic kit, monopod or tripod you plan to use. SanDisk or equivalent CF or SD card, 16 GB, 30-45 MB/s. Boots that won’t get wet in the ocean tide. V5 Cinema Verite Filmmaking (French) No Audio
Description – In the tradition of the great French filmmakers we’ll “take to the streets” to create short, impressionistic film vignettes in a variety of locations using natural light and reflectors. You do not have to speak French…just think French…think sensual….think scenes that make your heart fall in love again. PREREQUISITES: Completion of V1 - Basic Steps to Shoot Video – Part One, Level B and Level C Topics: I want you to learn to take the “great shots” you see on the street and expand them into a 1 – 2 – 3 short film vignette. So we’ll find a great still shot and STRETCH it into a longer, filmic visual communication. Models will help us stage the action. Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, camera strap, Polarizer, Neutral Density Filters Series 3, 6 and/or 9, monopod/tripod (with fluid head if possible, but not essential), three charged batteries and charger, SanDisk or equivalent 16 or 32 GB card, 45 MB/s is fast enough. V7 Cinema Verite Filmmaking w/audio (French)
Description – Again, in the tradition of the great French filmmakers we’ll “take to the streets” shooting short, impressionistic film vignettes on the sands of Pismo Beach area. Prerequisites – Completion of Basic Steps to Shoot Video – Part One, You do not have to speak French…just think French…think sensual….think scenes you’ll fall in love with, that’ll get your heart going again, scenes that relay the “touch”, the “feel”, the “warmth”, the “dance” of the area. Level B and Level C Topics: Using different lenses for different effects, rolling focus during the shot, moving the camera sensuously, planning “discovery/impact” points in the filming sequence, learning to focus during the action, handling exposure shifts and white balance shifts during the shot. Description – Now we switch to All-American, we’re number one, filmmaking genre to capture impressionistic film vignettes at Morro Bay Harbor South portraying Yankee power, courage and pride…dramatic angles of power and the sea. Prerequisites – Completion of Basic Steps to Shoot Video – Part One, Level B and Level C Topics: Composing strong architectural beginnings and endings of flowing, panning shots. Using a dolly to add the third dimension. Gear Needed: Canon DSLR, camera strap, Polarizer, Neutral Density Filters Series 9, monopod/tripod (with fluid head if possible, but not essential), three charged batteries and charger, SanDisk or equivalent 16 or 32 GB card, 45 MB/s is fast enough. We’ll be on the move so won’t have a lot of time to write. You’ll learn by doing, so I’ll be the “director” asking you (my camera person) to come up with shots. V12 Video Portfolio Review
Description –Fletch will give you his suggestions of how to improve your skillsets and answer any questions you have about difficulties you ran into during the week of filming, and it’s a last opportunity to offload your shots from the week. Prerequisites – Have shot video with your Canon DSLR Level A, B, C Topics: How to improve your filmmaking skillsets. Gear Needed: Bring your shots and computer to display them. Physical Requirements: Easy, breezy. No outline will be provided for this class. TOPICS: You will get tips on camera position, camera movement, lighting, pacing, sequencing, millimeter choice for video. GEAR – Video you shot during the week on a hard drive / thumb drive / etc. to be offloaded. If we reach maximum capacity we may extend the hours of the class so everyone has the opportunity for input and learning.
